Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Wyzie Subs.

How does the free plan work?

The Free plan gives 1,000 requests per day at no cost, with access to 2 of our 6 providers (charlie and lima). It is meant for testing and small personal projects. Upgrade to Pro when you need more requests or the full provider list. See the live list for what is currently enabled.

What providers can each plan use?

Pro keys can hit all 6 enabled providers: charlie, foxtrot, india, juliet, lima, and mike. Free keys are limited to charlie and lima, which cover the largest catalogs of movie and TV subtitles. The live list reflects what is enabled in real time.

What is AI Translation?

AI Translation works on every key, free included: any title that has a subtitle in any language can be had in 80+ languages on demand. Results are delivered quickly and ready for immediate playback. A translation costs 1 request, the same as a normal download (free keys use it from the daily 1,000). Browser-safe keys can't use it. A free key can translate up to 200 subtitles a day (the limit resets at midnight UTC); a Pro key has no daily limit. See the docs for usage details.

Can I convert, clean up or sync subtitles?

Every plan, free included, can convert subtitles to SRT, WebVTT, ASS, SBV, TTML, MicroDVD (sub), plain text (txt) or JSON, shift the timing (shift), fix frame-rate drift, reflow long lines (reflow, lines) and set a minimum display time (mindur). Three download options are Pro only (Pro keys and the Monthly plan): hearing-impaired removal strips cues like [DOOR SLAMS] and (sighs), speaker labels and ♪ lyric lines; the swear filter masks strong profanity in English subtitles, keeping the first letter; and two-language subtitles add a second language under each line, with the timing matched automatically (1 extra request, only when a matching second-language file is found). Free keys that ask for one are refused and not charged. Wyzie Synced is also Pro only: at sub.wyzie.io/synced, enter your Pro key, pick your video file and the title, and get the best-matching subtitle re-timed to the audio of your copy. The audio is analyzed in your browser, so the video is never uploaded. Developers can use POST /sync with a Pro key. Each successful sync costs 5 requests. See the docs for download options and Wyzie Synced.

Can Wyzie make subtitles for my own videos or podcasts?

Yes, with Wyzie Transcribe (Pro only). At sub.wyzie.io/transcribe, enter your Pro key and pick any audio or video file, or a folder of up to 50: a podcast, your own YouTube video, a lecture. Speech recognition writes down every word with its timing and you download an SRT, WebVTT or ASS file. Your browser pulls out the audio first, so the video itself is never uploaded. It costs 6,000 requests per 30 minutes of audio (anything shorter still costs 6,000). Speaker labels cost 60,000 per 30 minutes, and translating the result adds 25. Sound descriptions (beta) add 100 per 30 minutes. The cost is charged when the job starts. If it fails on our side you get it all back. A file with no speech is still charged, because recognition ran; a file we refuse before recognition is free. Fix Subtitles (Pro) corrects the words, timing and missing lines of an existing subtitle at the same price. Developers can use POST /transcribe, POST /fix and POST /transcribe/batch. See the docs.

How do I get the best-matching subtitle for my file?

Add the video's file name as video to a search and, if you have it, the 16-character OpenSubtitles hash as hash. Results then come back best first, each with a match score from 0 to 100 and the reasons (hash, release group, source, resolution and so on). A subtitle for the wrong season or episode scores 3 or less. A hash only upgrades OpenSubtitles results that are already in the title's results to an exact match, and the first lookup of a hash can add a few seconds. Some results also carry a quality score and flags, but only when we already know it from files served through Wyzie. This costs nothing extra: a search is still 1 request.

Can I put a key in my website's JavaScript?

Yes, Pro accounts can make browser-safe keys in the dashboard. Each one starts with wyzie-pub-, works only on the websites you list, has its own daily cap and an hourly cap per visitor address, and bills your account. You can have 20 active keys, each with up to 20 websites. They can only search, download subtitles, search by quote and list sources. Transcribe, Fix Subtitles, bulk, Synced, translation and account routes are refused. The website check uses the browser's Origin header, which anything outside a browser can fake, so the real protection is the caps, the feature limits and revoking the key.

Can Wyzie call my server when a Transcribe job finishes?

Yes. Add webhook=https://your.server/path to Transcribe, Fix Subtitles or a bulk job (webhookEach sends one message per item). We send one signed POST when the job ends. The x-wyzie-signature header lets you check it came from us, and x-wyzie-delivery lets you drop duplicates, because delivery is at least once. If your server does not answer with a 2xx within 5 seconds we retry after 30 seconds, 5 minutes and 30 minutes, then give up. The message holds the job id, status, cost and a link to the result, never your key or the subtitle. Webhooks are free.

Can I pull subtitles out of my own MKV?

Yes. POST the file to /extract with any key, free included, and get its text subtitle tracks back as SRT, ASS or WebVTT files (add list=1 to see the tracks first). Image-based tracks such as PGS and VobSub can't be turned into text. For a big film, send only the subtitle tracks: ffmpeg -i movie.mkv -map 0:s -c copy subs.mks. It costs 1 request per track, and the file is deleted when the request ends. You can try it in the docs.

Can I see what my key spent?

Yes, and it is free. Every response carries X-Wyzie-Cost, X-Wyzie-Balance and X-Wyzie-Plan headers, and GET /usage returns your balance with a per-day breakdown for the last 30 days. The dashboard shows the same table and has a balance webhook field: we send a signed message to your URL when a Pro balance runs low or empty, or when a free key has used its daily 1,000.

Is there a Python, Go or MCP client?

Yes. Python: wyzie-subs on PyPI. Go: github.com/wyziedevs/wyzie-go. For AI assistants, run the MCP server with npx wyzie-mcp. JavaScript has wyzie-lib on npm. Setup for each is on the clients page.

Is the same audio recognised twice?

No. We keep the recognised text of audio for 30 days under a hash of the audio, with no key, user, job id or file name attached. Anyone who sends the same audio gets the same text back at the same price, and the x-wyzie-cache response header says hit or miss. Add cache=0 to skip both reading and writing. The finished subtitle itself still goes one hour after the job ends.

Is there a status page or uptime API?

Yes. sub.wyzie.io/status shows every provider's live state and 30 days of uptime, and /status/api has the same as JSON for your own monitoring: uptime over 24 hours to 90 days, incidents and a shields.io badge. It is free and needs no key.

How do I hear about changes to the API?

Announcements are posted at sub.wyzie.io/news. Enter your email there to get each post by email (you confirm first, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe), or follow the RSS feed.

Is there a rate limit?

There is no per-second rate limit. Free keys are capped at 1,000 requests per day (resets at midnight UTC). Pro keys consume from your prepaid request balance, with no daily cap beyond that.

Will I be notified when my balance is running low?

Yes. At 80% usage you get an email with a single-use top-up link. If auto top-up is enabled, the next top-up runs automatically when you cross the threshold you set on the dashboard.

What happens if I exceed my limit?

Pro keys can top up from $0.0625 per 5,000 requests, with bulk discounts that climb to 35% off at 50M+ requests. Auto top-up (optional) keeps service running by buying a fresh pack when your balance falls below your chosen threshold, capped by a monthly spend ceiling you set. Free keys wait until midnight UTC. See the billing page for the full pricing curve.

How does the bulk discount work?

Top-ups scale on a tiered curve: 100K (2% off), 250K (5%), 500K (10%), 1M (15%), 2.5M (17.5%), 5M (20%), 10M (25%), 25M (30%), and 50M+ caps at 35% off. The discount applies to the whole order, not just the tier above. The picker on the top-up page shows the exact price and the next tier as you adjust the amount.

Is there a subscription?

Yes. The Monthly plan is $32/month for 6,000,000 requests (about 200,000/day), auto-billed to a card via Stripe. Prefer pay-as-you-go? Start with a one-time $5 Starter and add optional top-ups instead. Subscriptions are card-only (no crypto); cancel anytime from the billing portal, and any top-up balance you bought stacks on top of the monthly allowance.

How can I reset my API token?

Rotate it yourself from the dashboard: load your account with your current key and choose Rotate API Key. The new key is emailed to the address on file and the old one stops working almost immediately. Your plan, request balance, usage history, and settings all carry over, so rotating never costs you any remaining requests. If a key may have leaked, rotate it right away. Rotation needs an email on file and is limited to 5 per hour; if you get stuck, contact us via Discord or email.

How do I track my usage?

Paste your API key into the dashboard to see remaining requests, recent payments, auto top-up settings, and the card on file (if any).

Do you offer refunds?

Since the service is digital, we do not refund. If there is downtime or a real issue on our end, we will credit additional requests to your account.

How do I get a free API key?

Free keys require a Turnstile captcha and email verification on the redeem page. Most major personal email providers work (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, Proton, iCloud, GMX, Yandex, Naver, QQ, 163, and others); disposable / throwaway domains are blocked. This is what keeps the free tier alive against bulk abuse.

What payment methods do you accept?

Credit or debit card via Stripe, and several cryptocurrencies via NOWPayments. The Stripe processing fee is passed through at cost as a separate line item; crypto orders add a flat 10% processing fee on top of the base price, shown as a separate line at checkout before you pay.
